The 19th and early 20th century economy of Taunton was based on silversmithing and shipbuilding. Today, Taunton hosts companies engaged in the manufacture of semiconductors, medical devices, electronics, and silicon. Despite this expansion in its economic base, Taunton’s silversmithing past is still evident in the Reed & Barton complex which now houses a variety of offices, companies and industries.
